What are the “Wilis” and Why Are They So Creepy?

I only discovered the concept of “Wilis” a few days ago. Wilis (pronounced “WEE-lees”) are a type of ancient Slavic folklore creature. They are the ghosts of maidens who have died of heartbreak after being betrayed by men.

Wilis are considered very dangerous. Any man who encounters a wili late at night near a graveyard will be killed. And yes, just men. Wilis leave women alone.
