Cooley, Mead and Freud

Charles Horton Cooley was an early 20th century sociologist who is most well-known for his phrase “looking-glass self.”

“Looking-glass” is a rather old-fashioned term for a mirror, but the meaning of Cooley’s term is apparent. Cooley believed that human beings act and see themselves as they believe others see them. Society is a “looking-glass” (mirror) by which we see ourselves.
